The French scholar Salomon de Caus (1576-1626), known in Heidelberg for his bold, utopian designs for the Hortus Palatinus, also wrote fundamental works on physical acoustics, theory, and aesthetics here with the Institution harmonique (1615).
Prof. Lellouch and students (Cité des Arts / Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole) present De Caus’ findings on interval and proportion theory in a scientific-artistic sound installation.
250 years after De Caus, another sound researcher’s epoch-making work was created in Heidelberg: Hermann von Helmholtz‘s Lehre von den Tonempfindungen (1863) (Theory of Sound Sensations).
Two commissioned works by KlangForum Heidelberg reflect on Helmholtz’s personality from today’s perspective as the epitome of the German professor and the (neo-German) scientist with an affinity for music, closing the circle between two universal scholars of their time – and their Heidelberg careers and legacies.
